CARNIVAL FEVER: Three nights of Gritty, Hard-hitting, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Latin, Afrobeat, Afro-Reggae, funk and Reggae. Featuring Bay Area's top Bands and DJ's
Every year, San Francisco's famed Carnival brings tens of thousands of revelers to the city's Mission District for an annual celebration of life, music, dance, spirituality, and good times. But after the parade is over and the live bands are through for the day, Carnival celebrants have often found themselves all dressed up - and in many cases, costumed - with no place to go after dark. Enter Carnival Fever!!!
With three nights of events featuring some of the best global talent the Bay has to offer, Carnival Fever has your after-party dialed in. The best part is, you don't even have to leave the Mission District to get your groove on. The multicultural extravaganza (which takes place at 12 Galaxies May 23-25) is the only Carnival party to feature a diverse array of international artists, dancers, and DJs representing Brazil, Kenya, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Liberia, Spain, England, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Argentina.
The fete begins on Friday evening, headlined by Aphrodesia, a SF-based nu-Afrobeat unit who recently became the first American group to play Femi Kuti's Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria; the Mission's own Bayonics, a big band who mix Latin music with hip-hop, reggaeton, funk, and jazz; Boca Del Rio, one of the Bay's best Brazilian samba and bossa outfits; and DJ Sep, founder of SF's longest-running club night, Dubmission.
Saturday's party doesn't stop, with performances from Kenyan groovemaster and Maisha Productions co-founder Sila and the Afrofunk Experience; All-Filipino reggae and ska experts Native Elements; Brazilian dance troupe Sambamora; legendary DJ and Six Degrees recording artist Cheb i Sabbah; and last but not least, Maisha Productions co-founder DJ Jeremiah, performing a special set with Afrobeat Nation.
The Carnival spirit continues with Sunday's grand finale, headlined by Brazilian expatriates Bat Makumba, and also featuring Mission-based funk/plena/reggae/salsa specialists Manicato (representing the Puerto Rican/Taino contingent); nu-Chicano/cumbia band Fuga (representing Mexico); Brazilian dance from Sambaora Dance Company; and one of SF's best-loved DJs, Vanka (Stellar Trax/Dubmission).
With such an impressive lineup of artists - representing the Afro-Latin diaspora and beyond - Carnival Fever is sure to live up to its name. Don't miss the hottest party of the year - all three nights of it!!!
