The evening is the public opening and festive celebration of
Double Exposure: African Americans Before and Behind the Camera.
MoAD is proud to be the first venue of this nationally traveling
exhibition.
The exhibition unites historical photographic images from the
Amistad Center for Art and Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum
of Art in Hartford, Connecticut with contemporary photo-based
artists.
The historical images include works by: James VanDerZee, Roy
DeCarava, and Betye Saar.
Contemporary works include artists such as: Carrie Mae Weems and
Dawoud Bey.
The works initiate a profound multigenerational dialogue about the
notion of “double exposure” as it presents work that
reflects both contemporary and historical issues of identity,
family, and culture that concern us all. Includes works by
contemporary photographers:
Maya Freelon Asante, April Banks, Sheila Pree Bright, Kesha Bruce,
Albert Chong, Renee Cox, Gerald Cyrus, Alan Kimara Dixon, Bridget
Goodman, Myra Greene, Leslie Hewitt, Melvina Lathan, Stephanie
Lindsey, Willie Middlebrook, Wendy Phillips, Glynnis Reed, Bayete
Ross Smith, Lorna Simpson, Clarisaa Sligh, Darryl Smith, Carrie Mae
Weems, Amanda Williams, Lewis Watts, Carla Williams, Hank Willis
Thomas, and Deborah Willis.
This public opening of Double Exposure will feature two live bands, DJ, Cocktails, wine, and simple hors d’oeuvres.
