FRIENDS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO LIBRARY PRESENTS
THE BIGGEST BOOK SALE ON THE WEST COAST
44th Annual Big Book Sale September 25-28, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO , CA - Book lovers get ready! Friends of the San Francisco Public Library is hosting their biggest book sale to date. The 44th Annual Big Book Sale, the largest book sale on the West Coast, is just around the corner with over 50,000 more books than last year! The sale will also feature DVDs, CDs, books on tape, cassette tapes, vinyl, VHS, and other forms of media. The Big Book Sale will be held at Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion September 25—28, 2008 with a member preview on Wednesday, September 24. All proceeds from the sale benefit the San Francisco Public library. The sale is free and open to the public.
The five-day extravaganza will kick-off with a Friends of the SFPL member’s reception and preview sale on Wednesday, September 24 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Admission is free to the general public Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Books will range from $1-$5 and all books remaining on Sunday will be priced at $1 or less.
All proceeds from the Big Book Sale are given to the San Francisco Public Library to fund education programs that promote literacy for children, teens and adults. Last year, over $250,000 was raised for San Francisco’s libraries.
The Big Book Sale is a logistical feat that involves over 300,000 books in over 50 categories, 350 volunteers, 8,000 boxes and 300 tables. Throughout the year, Friends of the SFPL staff and volunteers collect both used and new books from a variety of different sources, including estate sales, businesses, publishers, and the people of San Francisco.
Since 1961, Friends of the SFPL has been enriching our public libraries and encouraging literacy efforts throughout the City. In 1964, Friends of the SFPL held its first Book Sale to raise funds for the Library and provide quality, affordable books to the San Francisco community. Almost 45 years later the Big Book Sale is a San Francisco favorite event, a five-day book bonanza that draws over 15,000 attendees to Fort Mason.
The Big Book Sale will continue to offer old favorites like "Best of Book Bay" which features collectible rare books, first editions, as well as just plain strange books discovered by Friends of the SFPL volunteers.
