"Tribute to Prince" with Kev Choice Ensemble (Event Over)
- When:Fri 11/20 (8PM)
- Where: Shattuck Down Low
- Address: 2284 Shattuck Ave. @ Bancroft Berkeley, CA Map
Pianist-emcee Kev Choice leads his 10-pc. outfit — the Kev
Choice Ensemble — through the aural equivalent of a master
class in African American music. This enormously talented unit lays
down symphonic slap, furious funk, sweet soul, jumpin’ jazz,
and hype hip-hop (with a conscious lyrical twist).
Consisting of some of the hottest up and coming musicians/artist
and producers in the Bay Area, The Ensemble is a force to be
reckoned with. Local Jazz powerhouses Howard Wiley, Geechi Taylor,
and Charlie Coop hold down a formidable horn section, Howard having
released his own critically acclaimed projects over the last couple
of years. Former Berkelee School of Music student, Viveca Hawkins,
who has collaborated with the likes of SoulLive, Blackilicious, and
Goapele, adds her distinctive soulful vocals that blend seamlessly
with the powerful sound of the Ensemble. Hassan Hurd on Drums,
Dewey Tucker on Bass, and Greggo Simmons on Guitar, all have solid
upbringings in the strong Bay Area Gospel scene and have gone on to
tour with artist such as The Coup and Bilal. Antario Holmes on keys
and Aagee on special effects/samples, are both solid producers
having worked with many Bay Artists ranging from Hieroglyphics to
Erk tha Jerk. Percussionist Mosheh Milon, a producer/artist
himself, is versed in various percussion styles and is a vet in the
local music scene. Somewhat of an All-Star Band, you will not want
to miss them in action!!
