The Junction comes around full circle with a reunion concert to
kick off the new year with three phenomenal sets featuring
The Kev Choice Ensemble, Jrod Indigo & B’nai Rebelfront. Rhythm Selector
Afrikan Sciences spins soul, hip-hop & rare grooves. Special guest host
Jennifer Johns.
About the artists:
Currently at work on his
highly-anticipated debut,
The Broken Mold, Oakland native
Kev Choice is a multi-talented songwriter, composer, arranger, keyboardist,
and MC, who blends classical chops, jazz nuances, and hip-hop
flavor into one solid package. After serving as Musical Director
for the fabulous Ms.
Lauryn Hill, touring and doing session work for notable Bay Area artists and
national acts like
Lauryn Hill, Spearhead,
Lyrics Born,
Too $hort and Martin Luther, Kev is ready to show the world another side of
his considerable talents.
Born in
the Bronx,
B’nai Rebelfront moved to
Oakland at age 18, where he was soon taken under the wings of singer Rosie
Gaines (best known for her work with Prince). After touring
Europe, he returned to the bay, where he cut his teeth with local
rock-funk outfit Kolorbox. Since then he’s toured and played
on albums by a long list of artists, most notably The Coup, Martin
Luther,
Tony Toni Tone, and Mystic. A guitar avatar and vocalist in the mold of
Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton, B’nai specializes in original
rebel music that rocks with a whole lotta soul, yet doesn’t
skimp on funk.
A
native of Chicago, birthplace of house music, singer
Jrod Indigo describes his sound as “progressive soul/funk over mid-west
house rhythms.” On his Infectious EP, he eschews the tired,
sadly predictable, and oft-cliched state of contemporary R&B,
instead gravitating toward the nu-school soul of Bilal, Van Hunt,
Omar, and Sa-Ra Creative Partners. After stints in
Atlanta and
Seattle, JRod has settled in
Oakland, where he continues to sharpen his writing skills and concentrate
on perfecting the craft of musicianship, rather than following
commercial trends.
This is a 21+ event.
